Thanks in advance for your help, You cannot get these ISO (probably Rock Ridge) images legally at present, but you can request your software media and an unlimited number of licensed for $75.00 USD + shipping/handling.Well, things have changed (since yesterday?).If you want to, you.can. download the contents of the Solaris 8 10/00mediakit now. Juergen,I downloaded 'sol-8-1000-install-fcs-bin-ia-ml'from.It was a zipped file. After unzipping it, what should I do?Should I write the whole file onto a CD? It doesn't looklike a ISO image file. James McGovern wrote: Is there anywhere on Sun's site that I can get Gnome or KDE (the builds from the Companion CD)?Hi, James.I think you cannot get the stuff provided with the Companion CD. Thisuseful cdrom is provided with the Solaris 8 media as a value-addedpackage for people that buy Solaris.

You will probably need to buy anew software media (but I cannot say nothing about Sun, in fact theyare offering StarOffice for free when it was a commercial product andnow even ISO images of Solaris 8! When the WorkShop C compiler as partof Solaris?).You can try to get precompiled binaries for Solaris 8 from eitherthe Gnome project homepage (, but at presentthey only offer binaries for UltraSparc architectures) or Sunfreewareif available (I think that now it is not available for download). In any case, you can build it from source.Hope this helps,Igor.-Igor Sobrado, UK34436 -Daniel Chee03.02.01 16:51.

Unzip the CD images using unzip software (e.g., pkunzip). Each time, thiswill create a file with the same name as the file you downloaded but withoutthe.zip extension. That file is a CD image (up to 650 Mbytes); make sureyou have space on your hard drive.

Then, create a CD from these images usingyour favorite CD creation software. Depending on the software package youuse, you will have to rename the file first to have an extension thesoftware recognizes as a CD image.

For example, if you use Easy CD Creator, add the extension.iso to the file name. Next, from the File Menu in theprogram, select Create CD from CD image. Then, select that image file. This should do it, right?Dave'Terry' wrote in messagenews:MPG.14e388fcb768bf32989689@news.tc.umn.edu.Igor Sobrado04.02.01 09:37. I did just as described. After downloading the first three ISO images(installation-cd, software-cd 1 and 2), I burned them with WinOnCD onthree CDR. The two software cds look good, but unfortunatly theinstallation cd is broken. The filesystem is broken, it show only 96kdata under windows and nothing more. And it is not bootable, afterthe blue boot screen it turns grey and the second stages bootladerhangs.Does anyone have a clue, what could be the problem? Thanks for your help,LajosIn article,Sent via Deja.comAlan Coopersmith05.02.01 21:49. Writes in alt.solaris.x86: Well I followed the instructions from Sun's website, burned the first three CDs with WinOnCD. The Software CDs are okay, but the installation CD is not bootable and the filesystem seems to be broken.

It only shows 96k of data and nothing more. Does anybody have clue how to burn a working installation CD?If you check previous postings to this newsgroup, you'll find manypeople convinced that not even Sun has figured out how to produce aworking Installation CD, and that you should just toss it out andstart from the 'Disk 1 of 2' CD.-Alan Coopersmithaka: Alan.Coopersmith@Sun.COMWorking for, but definitely not speaking for, Sun Microsystems, Inc.Igor Sobrado06.02.01 03:20. Check too the last Solaris updates. Some patches add support for new hardware. Not sure what is the recommended way (sure that Solaris 8Software 1 of 2 is the preferred way but I cannot say if it isbetter to boot from the diskette or directly from the cdrom). Ifyour BIOS do not supports bootable cdroms try (1) to upgrade yourBIOS release, (2) to boot from the DCA diskette.

Igor you are great man thanks for al your time it looks i'm a silly solaris user but believe me i'm not the worseNo in both cases! I am not a great man, a lot of people help me muchmore last months that I am helping you now. And you are not a sillySolaris user, you are starting with this new operating system. Someweeks ago I had the same problem (I learned recently how to installthe Solaris operating system from the INSTALLATION cdrom instead ofthe Solaris 8 Software cdrom) and I had some problems that probablysounds silly but that really stopped me some days (by the way, I amnot sure how these problems go away yet).Best regards,Igor.-Igor Sobrado, UK34436 -Daniel Chee08.02.01 21:08. Anyways, there doesn't seem to bea limit on how big a drive can be for installing Solaris. My 7 installationwent on a 30GB IDE fine. I was going to install 8 on another machine with a9GB SCSI, but the downloaded images I have are bad.Igor, I was wondering if you know how to configure sendmail. I'm having a hard time configuring it to relay from my internal machines to the outside world. Thanks.I do not know a lot about sendmail, but I can say you that you canedit /etc/mail/ to change the DS register to look somelike '.

If theproblem is related with the internal hosts in your subnet, andnot with the Solaris host itself you probably are looking foran implementation of a protocol like POP3 or IMAP.Can you explain what is your problem? It is related with theSolaris host (it cannot send e-mails because it do not knowswhat relay host should use) or it is related with the networkworkstations (the internal workstation cannot send e-mailsthrough the Solaris host)?Best regards,Igor.-Igor Sobrado, UK34436 -Felix Chung01.04.01 01:49.
