I bought this adapter to read off some internal hard disks I have accumulated, thinking it would be easier than dismantling an old CRT imac each time.On connecting it up to the hard disk nothing apparent happens, eg. No disk icon on the desktop.Just to be clear. There is a usb connection at one end of the cable and the other has the IDE connector that goes into the back of the drive.

There is also a power lead/adaptor to provide external power for the drive. There is a light on the cable that lights as soon as the usb connection is made with the computer and this lights independantly of the mains power adaptor. There are drivers supplied but they are for OS 9 but I took it for granted drivers wouldnt even be necessary.Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas on how I could get this going?Thank you very muchRichard.

Thanks for your reply and sorry for not providing the obviously necessary info. It really isnt clear what the brand is tho - it could be called an 'R-DRIVER II' as printed on the box. It was bought off ebay and sent from Hong Kong (I can hear the groans but in my ignorance I really just saw it as a cable with an adaptor at one end and usb at the other. The instal disk labels the driver: GENE USB IDE05E30702.SIT I did find this this and extract it but it is for OS 9 so I assumed it wouldnt work.I checked around here and saw that I need:- USB Device Extension- USB Software LocatorHave checked in the extensions and cant see either but dont know why. Any thoughts? I'll have a look around online and see if I can download them.Thank you for your help. Thank you kindly for your help Dr Smoke and for laughing at me - I can take it 🙂Your comments are helpful indeed and have opened up some ideas for experimenting.

I had considered trying the old iMac in OS 9 as that is still installed and runs when necessary. I could also try a CD drive as another test - it is possible some of the drives may be stuffed, I have four but am sure some worked when removed.Ummm, thank you too for pointing out the mis-leading info in my profile. Am suitably chastised and have corrected the info. Many many thanks for your help. Apple Footer. This site contains user submitted content, comments and opinions and is for informational purposes only.
