Review 1: I agreed with Samantha Bee. It really did highlight how terribly and subtly difficult the life of a newly-arrived immigrant to Canada can be. Who can dismiss the experience of the man in this book? Oly people who have never actually picked up and deliberately lived somewhere else. Whether or not you have parallel experiences to the 'cockroach' I believe everyone who has lived in another culture, not as a tourist, will empathise with the incongruities of not being able to understand the cultural ebb and flow of life sometimes; and certainly it does not always work to try and explain why there are such incongruities.

It was my favourite Canada Reads book. Until I read the Orenda. But I see why it was translated into the number of languages it was!review 2: I. T's entertaining most of all.
It's interesting as the story revolves around a psycho. I read it in grade 12 and at that time it was mind opening. I like that the part in which the main character is held under gunpoint by a rich pretense/fake friend of his and the main character calmly takes the gun away from his friend's hand saying it takes courage to shoot which you don't have.
I like that it exposes the reality of some parts of middle east, the hidden behind these great religious characters. I'd read it again as it's been 4 years since.
