Ok peeps.I have 2 ESX hosts with about 12 VM's between them. ESX supports HA, DRS, VMotion etc.I have an ageing Smart UPS DP6000 that hsa a web interface card which supports the network shutdown of physical hosts.A long time ago APC had some Power shutdown software (can't remember name) which installs on Windows 2003. So for some VM's I guess I can get them to shut down.Now here's the question, what do I do with my 2008R2 vm's, XP vm's and esx hosts?

How do I get them to shut down if UPS battery is say less than 10%?ThanksTino. I'm not too sure if having so many of the same actions with same targets will have any negative impact on IPM executing the actions, but I think it is better to delete or make inactive the duplicated ones.To shut down the VMs first and then the host, keep the 'Shutdown guest VMs first, then host' action active. Make sure the Host Target and Event Source are tied to the policy you set before (you can rename the policy to something more meaningful to make it easier to identify). You can also rename the Action Name for the same purpose. Set a timeout value (estimated time of how long it takes for the last VM to shut down), it is optional but often a good practice in case some of the VMs get stuck in the shutdown process, the host can shut down after this timeout value and not kept hanging until UPS battery runs dry.Then double check the policy settings that is tied to that action, if the one on the screenshot before is what you're comfortable with then it is OK.

But check also the 'Targeted Nodes' and see if that is the correct IP address for the ESX you want to protect, and also the 'Class List' should be Runtime threshold settings + power source.After all that it should be fine. If you can perform a test, change the 'Runtime threshold settings - Timer' on the policy settings to 30s, then simulate a power failure on the UPS. IPM should count down to 30s before telling you the runtime threshold has reached and then execute the action.

After the test is successful, change back the 'Runtime threshold settings - Timer' to the one you want (600s?). Good question. Yeah I read that, and I'm going to budget for a new UPS.Has anyone actually installed PCNS 2.24 for ESX on their ESX 4 hosts though? It'd be interesting to hear from someone who has had experience of this.I'm always a bit loathe to install something non VMWare based on a VMWare ESX box.

Who supports it if it goes belly up???I'm going to mark Bytesnake's second response as a Best Answer for now. The truth is that it is doable with a mixture of PCNS installed on ESX and ESX settings to control VM shutdowns. However on my ancient equipment I don't think it will be supported so I don't think I'll be able to give it a whirl until a new UPS is installed.Thanks muchlyTino. I thought I would update 'a' forum post in regards to VMWare being gracefully shutdown due to a power failure by getting SNMP to work.Granted I don't have SNMP UPS monitoring working but I did find a work around that seems to be working.Mind you that my network consists of a PfSense Router, a FreeNAS storage array and a VMWare machine.

Not a big network I know but useful none the less and running much more would give me a much larger power bill than I am willing to pay.So with that.My work around is NUT being installed in VMWare and connecting to a master device that is able to monitor the UPSMy FreeNAS box is able to see my UPS as was my PfSense box but FreeNAS has a option to allow remote monitoring of NUT so I configured accordingly.Both PfSense and VMWare are monitoring FreeNAS for information in regards to the UPS. Not optimal I know but it works and is WAY better than nothing.The setup and configuration for installing NUT in VMWare can be found here.I must thank the author of that page for posting as it has alleviated my UPS woes.
