Cannata Watching The World Rare
BIOIn the early days of the Art Rock Movement, Jeff Cannata formed the prog rock band, Jasper Wrath along with Michael Soldan, Robert Gianotti and Phil Stone. After signing to MGM Records, their first LP, recorded at Phil Ramone’s Studio (A& R) in New York, it received rave reviews. After extensive auditions, looking for the right additional 'voice', James Christian (House Of Lords) was added to the lineup, along with keyboard prodigy Jeff Batter and guitar virtuoso, Scott ZitoEquipped with full light show and effects, the band toured the Northeast to packed houses until 1976. Because of commercial and directional musical differences, that year, the group disbanded.1983The next few years Cannata, begins composing a dozen or so new pieces, along with writing partner Michael Soldan, Cannata assumes vocal duties and offers the demos, to then manager David Wolff and is signed to Portrait / CBS Records.Arc Angel is born. The LP is a monster hit in Europe.1988After being contacted by record executive Yves Dessca at (Carrere / CBS) Paris, Cannata is offered a deal he couldn’t refuse.
A recording budget that would enable the constuction of a complete 24 track analog studio at home, and to write and produce the new material for the next CD. ARC ANGEL – CANNATATamorok(OXFORD CIRCUS OXF002)On Anthology 1969-1976 by Jasper Wrath from 1996 there was with Big Life already a foretaste of the new album by Jeff Cannata to be heard. Six years later this foretaste appears to have given an excellent view from the music on Tamorok: first-rate produced rock that demonstrates affinity with crystal clear AOR as well as with modern symphonic rock, in which there is enough space for amongst others sharp and slurring guitar-solo’s, flawless, sometimes Yes-like choruses and attractive, but surely also bombastic keyboards. As far as that is concerned the opening-song and title-track is telling everything. Multi-instrumentalist (drums, guitars, synthesizers) and singer Cannata puts down a strong as well subtle song, which is being performed to perfection and in which the oriental flute-play of Robert Gianotti (lead guitarist in other tracks) occupies an important position. Cannata is someone who has never shunned social criticism in his lyrics, with which he also propagates a certain amount of charity.
He does it here also: Prisoner In The Hole Land for instance puts into words very well the powerlessness that many will feel with the long-term conflict between Palestinians and Israeli. That feeling of fierce is also in Dangerous Game and in the closing piece Kings Of Nations, which is interlarded by sounds of war, although there is also space for a sensitive ballad like Stay. Next to seven new tracks there is a new recorded version of Stars, from the only CD by Arc Angel (1983). From the Cannata-albums Images Of Forever (1988) and Watching The World (1993) the first three tracks are also added.
The music from these two bands was more into the AOR, although the mentioned trademarks were already amply present, though in smaller proportions. This all makes Tamorok, which has been released under a joining together of these group-names, an introduction with the beautiful new music by Jeff Cannata as well as a veiled compilation of his older work, which isn’t available at the moment.Information: www.arcangel-cannata.comKurt EricsonEmerson Lake and Who? When it comes to the subgenre of 'progressive AOR' there is one name that almost immediately springs to mind, that of musician/producer extraordinaire Jeff Cannata. The AOR classic Arc Angel from 1983 is hailed by many as one of AOR's finest moments. Jeff's solo albums Images of Forever (1988) and Watching the World (1993) are melodic masterpieces (sadly both are out of print). Tamorok takes material from those releases, gives them new life via remastering, adds a host of new material and ties it all up into a musical package that exceeds the term 'first rate'.Track By Track:1. New composition. The production is lush throughout; the arrangements captivating. When I use the term progressive AOR to categorize Jeff's works, I mean that the arrangements and structure are not of the stereotypical Verse-chorus-verse-chorus-solo-chorus-out format, yet the hooks and choruses are there in spades!
Different enough in structure and arrangement to hold your attention, yet never so pretentious as to detract from the melodies and harmonies. If I had to make an aural comparison, I would say that this material is very similar to Big-Generator era Yes (one of the most underrated melodic albums ever released IMHO). This is a greatest hits package and then some; the new material integrates extremely well with the older. I cannot stress enough how excellent this album is. The album can be purchased through MP3.Com.
I suggest you pick it up now.Rating (0-100):95 (Fantastic! You MUST own this!)Adagio. The name Jeff Cannata (ex-ARC ANGEL) is a true legend among the fans or keyboard oriented Melodic Rock, but I guess none of them really believed he would ever return with a new album: I mean, his last effort “Watching The World” was released 1993!!!
Well, but sometimes miracles do happen! Jeff Cannata’s new release “Tamorok” is a genius mix of 7 new songs and 7 older songs, taken from his rare two albums “Images Of Forever” and “Watching The World”. The album starts with the brilliant “Tamorok”, a song which is based on Jeff Cannata’s charismatic voice, huge walls of mystic keyboards and some fantastical flute sounds.
Due to it’s extremely thrilling atmosphere I can only describe it as the “X-Files” song. “Prisoner In The Holy Land” is another shining example for superbly arranged Pomp Rock. Due to it’s unrhythmical drum beat it takes a little longer to get used to the song, but don’t give up to early on it! After a few times, the hookline and the gigantic keyboard cascades will make it irresistable. “Big Life” is a pompous, and slightly progressive mid-tempo rocker which unites the best sides of ASIA, GENESIS and John Farnham. The huge vocal harmonies and dense keyboards make this song to the third killer in a row!
The following songs “When It’s Love”, “Watching The World” and “Let It Be” are taken from CANNATA’s second album “Watching The World”. All three tracks (in particular the moving ballad “Let It Be”) are classics and need no further introduction. The same applies to “Stars 2001” which is a great re-recording of the ARC ANGEL hit “Stars” of the year 1983. The new version has not only a much better sound and production but is also a little more upbeat than the original! “Calling To You” is another brand new track. It is pretty balladesque and plays with a some unusual percussion sounds and LED ZEPPELIN-like guitar leads.
Even though the arrangements and instrumentation tend to drift away from the rest of the album, the melody is unmistakably CANNATA. “Fortune Teller”, “Hand In Hand” and “Sailing Ships” are three songs from the extremely rare debut “Images Of Forever”. A special mention must go to “Fortune Teller” as it is the most popular CANNATA song and appeared on several Melodic Rock compilations. During the last 14 years, the heavenly vocal harmonies and the catchy hookline have lost nothing of their fascination! “Dangerous Game” is a surprisingly plain rocker which needs some time to grow. Even though the keyboards are not as loud and dominating as on the previous songs, they are always present and set the tone. “Stay” is a magnificent Pomp Rock ballad of which wonderful keyboards are pure magic!
The bombastic and quite progressive “King Of The Nation” rounds off an album that is close to perfection. The only thing I have to criticize about “Tamorok” is the missing of the two ARC ANGEL classics “Sidelines” and “Tragedy”. Maybe next time, Jeff!?!?RATING: 97% / PRODUCTION: 85% / PRESENTATION: 89%Gabor. I have always admired the work of multi-instrumentalist JEFF CANNATA. His best recording will always be ARC ANGEL's only release from 1983, an instant AOR/ Pomp Classic and maybe one of the best releases of all time! Songs like 'Stars' and 'Sidelines' are unforgettable classic tunes from the highest music quality you can get.
Anyway, after releasing two solo CDs, of which his latest 'Watching the World' was released through Now&Then Records, it became quiet around this talented man. Until now, because Jeff has finally released a new CD. The new album consists of 7 new songs and 7 classics. The old songs are songs taken from his two solo-albums and a re-recording of the ARC ANGEL classic 'Stars' on this 70-minutes counting CD. Of course those old songs are all classic AOR/ Pomp tunes, such as the fantastic 'Stars', 'When It's Love', 'Watching the World' and 'Sailing Ships'. But let's talk about those new songs, because I found them very interesting. Especially the first two songs ('Tamorok' and 'Prisoner in the Holy Land') are great exciting Sympho-AOR songs with lots of calmer parts, but both with a super strong melodic chorus in the style of classic ARC ANGEL.
The hi-tech AOR song 'Big Life' comes close to stuff ZAPPACOSTA, BODY ELECTRIC and of course Jeff himself did in the late 1980s, but the song itself isn't as strong as the first two new songs. 'Calling to You' is another new song, put between a bunch of old tunes, and it's the only new song that didn't appeal to me that much.
The other 3 new tracks are then again very impressive. 'Dangerous Game' is a good hi-tech AOR song with a hookline a la RUSS BALLARD. The lovely AOR ballad 'Stay' follows, and is yet another new masterpiece from Jeff. The CD closes nicely with the great Symphonic AOR rocker 'Kings of nations'. Although some might have hoped for a full-new CD in the style of ARC ANGEL, I can still recommend this new CANNATA CD to every fan of the man's work, because 6 of the 7 new included tracks are really fantastic and close to pure classic 80s AOR.
And if you never heard the man's earlier recordings, then this is a total must to check out, as you get some of his old classics as a bonus. Contact: www.ArcAngel-Cannata.com.SidSomething Special.
